QLS Ethics Guidance

The Queensland Law Society’s Ethics Centre provides a legal ethics guidance service to all QLS members and non-members (both lawyers and legal support staff). We do not provide guidance to members of the public.

Who we are

The Ethics Centre is comprised of Ethics Solicitors and an Ethics Research Assistant. With over 50 years of combined experience in legal practice, our Ethics Solicitors are well placed to assist with most queries you may have regarding legal ethics.

What we do

If you are a lawyer or work for a lawyer and have an ethical dilemma, our Ethics Solicitors are available to discuss and provide confidential ethical guidance. Even if the ethical issue relates to a confidential matter, you can be comfortable knowing that talking to us is permitted under the ASCR (see rule 9.2.3).

What to expect from the service

When you call the Ethics Centre you will be asked to provide some brief details about the issue. One of our Ethics Solicitors will call you back during which they will explore with you the context in which you are seeking guidance, to unpack the dilemma and guide you through the questions you need to ask yourself.

What not to expect

Our Ethics Solicitors do not provide guidance to the general public. Nor do our Ethics Solicitors provide legal advice. If you require legal advice we suggest you engage a suitably qualified lawyer. If you are a solicitor, please contact the Solicitors Hotline.

How we work

The majority of the guidance we provide is done over the phone. When you call the Ethics Centre, you will be asked to consent to the recording of the conversation for internal use only. If consent is provided, the recording is kept confidential. In some instances we may need to consider your query further and get back to you.
